Times Square

Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Manhattan, NYC, stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. Times Square was renamed in 1904 when the New York Times moved their business to the Times Building. Times Square has achieved its status as a world landmark and a symbol of New York.
Before the Revolutionary War, the area belonged to John Morin Scott, a general for the New York militia. His house was at what is now 43rd Street, surrounded by houses for farming and breeding horses. In the mid 19th century, Times Square became a prized possession of John Jacob Astor, who made a fortune selling lots to hotels and other real estate concerns as the city rapidly spread uptown.
As the growth of New York city continued, Times Square was beginning to become a cultural hub full of theaters, music halls, and of course, shopping centers.
Times Square today has millions of people walking its streets everyday. With big, vibrant, flashing signs and advertisements everywhere you look, no wonder those signs are called spectaculars. And no one can resist shopping in the Toys R Us with the giant ferris wheel inside, passing the M&M Factory without getting a bag of M&Ms, or going in the four story teen clothing store, Forever 21. These shops make New York’s economy the second highest in the world, no thanks to Times Square! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Square, 2009)
